With Starman traveling through space in a roadster, SpaceX has merged the very serious (and appropriately so) NASA attitude toward space exploration with the romantic whimsy of Douglas Adams, including a towel. Elon Musk acknowledged the risk, lowered expectations, and let the rocket’s performance and remarkable booster ballet put SpaceX on the front pages.
Musk’s tweets suggested Starman and the roadster had already traveled past the orbit of Mars: “Third burn successful. Exceeded Mars orbit and kept going to the Asteroid Belt.”
Clearly he knows that’s the trajectory, not the actual position, which was still only a few thousand miles from Earth, as shown in this photo he shared:
Fortunately, you can find the location of Starman and the roadster here:
At the time of this writing, it’s 616,369 km (383,000 miles) from Earth, traveling at 13,119 km/hr (8,000 mi/hr) relative to Earth.
